Which CDL is right for me?
CDL A
CDL Class A (Automatic or Stick-Shift)
This license will allow you to drive the following commercial vehicles:
• Tractor-Trailers
• Straight Trucks and Heavy Trucks over 26,000 lbs
Not Valid to Drive Vehicle with 8 or more Adult Passengers
CDL B
CDL Class B (Stick-Shift Only)
This license will allow you to drive the following commercial vehicles:
• Straight Trucks and Heavy Trucks over 26,000 lbs
Not Valid to Drive Vehicle with 8 or more Adult Passenger
Not Valid to Drive Tractor-Trailer
BUS
CDL Class BPS (Automatic or Stick-Shift)
This license will allow you to drive the following commercial vehicles:
• B = Straight Trucks and Heavy Trucks over 26,000 lbs
• P = MTA Buses, Coach, Shuttle Buses, Ambulette, Limousine, Tourist Buses, and Paratransit
• S = School Bus (small or big) Not Valid to drive Tractor-Trailer Vehicles
Hazmat
“HazMat” is an abbreviation for “hazardous material” and is a term that drivers will often see associated with Tanker driving. This is because many common hazardous materials such as gas, oil and other chemicals are liquid and must be carried in bulk via tanker trucks.
You must have a valid New York State commercial driver license (CDL) with a hazardous materials endorsement before you drive any size vehicle that is used in the transportation of any material that requires hazardous material placarding or any quantity of a material listed as a select agent or toxin in 42 CFR 73.
ELDT
On February 7, 2022, the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration’s (FMCSA) Entry-Level Driver Training (ELDT) rule went into effect. EDLT is a two-part requirement for anyone wanting to:
• Obtain a commercial driver’s license (Class A or B)
• Upgrade from Class B CDL to Class A
• Get a passenger (P), school bus (S), or hazmat (H) endorsement for the first time
