What is ELDT?The Department of Transportation’s Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA) has put a new rule into effect that requires all prospective commercial driver’s license (CDL) holders to get training at a certified institution.
This new rule is called the Entry-Level Driver Training Rule or ELDT for short. In a nutshell, the new ELDT regulation consists of three parts:
This new rule is called the Entry-Level Driver Training Rule or ELDT for short. In a nutshell, the new ELDT regulation consists of three parts:
1
Get TrainedIt’s mandatory for all prospective CDL holders to get trained at a certified institution like Ferrari Driving School. While you could previously train with a friend or family member who has a CDL, that is no longer an option.2
Theory & PracticeThe theory component covers topics such as traffic laws, vehicle inspection, and basic safety procedures. The practical component gives students the opportunity to put what they’ve learned into practice under the supervision of a licensed instructor.3
Get RegisteredA recognized school like Ferrari Driving School must register prospective CDL holders in the national registry, stating that they have completed the necessary training.ELDT TheoryOn February 7, 2022, the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration’s (FMCSA) Entry-Level Driver Training (ELDT) rule went into effect. EDLT is a two-part requirement for anyone wanting to:
Obtain a commercial driver’s license (Class A or B)
Upgrade from Class B CDL to Class A
Get a passenger (P), school bus (S), or hazmat (H) endorsement for the first time
Don’t worry if those topics sound daunting. Ferrari Driving School has designed an easy-to-follow, FMCSA-approved online lesson package that will make sure you are well-prepared to move on to behind-the-wheel training and finally your road test.
There is no final exam – simply finish all the lesson material and as soon as you are done, Ferrari Driving School will upload your certificate to FMCSA’s national registry, which will notify the DMV that you have completed the theory portion of the ELDT requirement. Under the new ELDT rule, all drivers must get their training at an approved institution, like Ferrari Driving School.

About the ELDT Regulations
What if I already have my CDL?
The new ELDT rule is not retroactive, meaning that it only applies to prospective CDL holders. If you already have your CDL, you are not required to take any additional training. It only applies to those who are:
- getting their CDL for the first time
- upgrading their existing CDL from Class B to Class A
- obtaining a new hazmat, passenger, or school bus endorsements
Does the ELDT require a specific number of hours?
